Mrs. Bortz, 1st Grade Teacher

I am a mother of two wonderful children, a set of twins that are heading into the fourth grade this fall.  As a mother of elementary school children, I try to be flexible and understanding with my student's parents.  I can assure you there are very few things I haven't heard or experienced first-hand as a parent myself.  Please know, I encourage open communication both with my students and their parents.  I feel that is an essential part of my classroom. I am also a caring and nurturing teacher because I know that first grade is a time of transition for all involved.  My job is to encourage a love of learning early so that your child will want to come to school, learn, and grow. I look forward to helping your child nurture their relationship with Jesus, our Lord and Savior, too.

I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area.  I double majored at California State University, Hayward where I graduated with two bachelor degrees.  I got my teaching credential from San Diego State University and I immediately started substitute teaching for the Poway Unified School District.  I took a few years off to expand my family then I started substitute teaching again.  I found a niche here at CTCA when Mrs. Defensor had her second child.  I taught her first grade class for three months while she was on maternity leave.  The following year I was blessed to be the classroom aide to Ms. Davis' second grade class.  I admire Ms. Davis and spending a year in her classroom taught me a lot!  Just this last school year, Mrs. Defensor had her third child and I was called upon again to teach during her maternity leave.  I've also been part of the CTCA substitute teacher pool for over three years.  I don't think there is a teacher on staff or recently retired that I haven't subbed for.  But, this is my time to plant some roots and find a grade of my own.  I'm so excited that your children will be taking this journey with me. With Christ in all we do, I plan to make it both educational and memorable.

I'd like to close with a quote from one of my favorite books,

“So...

be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!”
